What is Central Station Monitoring?

Let's start with some background information...

Once your alarm system has successfully detected fire, an intruder, or other emergency, the next step is to call for help.

In the early days, this call was in the form of a loud bell or siren. This system relied upon someone nearby hearing the alarm and taking some action. There were several problems. First, many times no one heard the alarm. Second, a neighbor or friend might suffer harm as they unexpectedly encountered a burglar while checking out the alarm themselves. Third, most people hearing the alarm don't want to call the police. (Have you ever heard a car alarm? Did you call the police?)

As technology moved on, tape dialers were introduced which would make a telephone call to the police department and play a tape recorded message. Since the machine could not tell if the call was received (busy?) it had to make several calls to ensure that the message was received. This raised serious objections from law enforcement because dialers could tie up an emergency line for several minutes. In many areas (including the State of Arkansas) these devices were made illegal.

Where available, a direct wire provided by the telephone company connected the alarm system to the police or fire departments. While an excellent means of alarm signal transmission, the cost becomes significant since the phone company charges by the mile. This could easily result is a phone bill of several hundred dollars per month!

Currently, the best value is central station monitoring. For this service, a digital communicator (usually built in to the alarm control panel) places a call to the central station. This call is answered by a computer which receives the alarm information and passes it on to a live dispatcher. The dispatcher then calls the police or fire department according to your pre-arranged plan.

Usually, residential alarm signals are verified before dispatch. To do this, the dispatcher first calls the premise. If it is a false alarm, the homeowner can abort the dispatch by giving a secret password. If no one is home, or the incorrect password is given, the dispatcher immediately calls for help. This step significantly reduces needless dispatches.
